Welcome to the Palm Beach County Preventive Medicine/Public Health Residency Program.
Throughout the years Palm Beach County has grown from a small seasonal population into a thriving community of over one million people. Like many metropolitan areas our community is diverse. However, we have the unique viewpoint of being home to many modern technology firms and at the same time one of the nations largest commercial farming communities.
Our Preventive Medicine/Public Health Residency Program is an important part of the Health Department. Started by Dr. Carl L. Brumback, MD, MPH in 1956, it is accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) and the AOA (American Osteopathic Association).
Training in the Residency Program concentrates on core areas: administration (including problem identification and analysis, program planning, management and evaluation, policy development and analysis, fiscal and personnel components, legislative and political aspects, development of leadership skills, and inter-agency cooperation); epidemiology and biostatistics; environmental sciences; behavioral science; and clinical preventive medicine. The training is accomplished by rotations through the various programs and services of the Health Department, lectures and seminars, assumption of responsibility for development of programs and services, clinical assignments, and research projects. Residents are involved in dealing with crises, such as outbreak investigation and control. They were very much involved in all aspects of the anthrax attack that began in Palm Beach County and they worked tirelessly during the 2004-2005 hurricanes.
There has been too little recognition of the need for personnel trained in preventive medicine and public health. The anthrax attack in 2001 has made that even more evident. We provide our residents with a sound academic and clinical education to promote good public health and prevent disease whether it’s in our community of Palm Beach County or another locality of your choice.
