General Information

The Preventive Medicine/Public Health Residency Program offers physicians learning opportunities to develop and enhance their level of competency in public health practice, program planning and administration. As a part of the residency program, Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU) provides the residents with the academic experience required to complete their Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. The program is open to both osteopathic and allopathic physicians and is accredited by both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association. Physicians completing the program are eligible to sit for the preventive medicine board exams.

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • An M.D. or D.O. physician.

  • Have completed an ACGME or AOA approved Post Graduate Year-1 in the United    States, in a primary care specialty.
  • Foreign Medical Graduates must have an ECFMG(Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certificate.
  • Candidates must pass all three steps of the USMLE(United States Medical Licensing Examination) or COMLEX(Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) prior to beginning the residency. There is no minimum passing score on these examinations

    MPH Degree

  • Master of Public Health is required to complete the Residency.
  • If candidate already has an MPH, the residency is one (practicum) year.
  • If MPH is needed; residents can complete the required coursework at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, tuition free.   The residency then takes two years to complete.

    Florida Medical License

  • Candidates must have a Florida medical license prior to starting the residency.
  • A Florida Training License can be obtained through the Board of Medicine after acceptance into the program.

    Requirements for Completion of Residency

  • Must have an MPH.
  • Must complete an original, publishable research project, and present it to the faculty for evaluation .
  • Must receive satisfactory evaluations in rotations during time in the program.
  • Must complete on-line course CDC, SS1000, “Principles of Epidemiology”
  • Must attend all scheduled meetings, lectures, seminars, and Journal Clubs.

    Please submit the following:

         1. Letter to the Program Director, requesting admission, including dates of availability.

         2. Completed and notarized Application form.

         3. Curriculum Vitae.

         4. Florida Medical License number.

         5. Evidence of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. if applicable.

         6. Certification of a PGY-1 year completed in the United States.

         7. Green Card if applicable.

         8. Personal Statement.

    This program does not support visas at this time.

    Opportunities for Employment

    From July 2000 through June 2007, of the 21 physicians completing the program, seven are working in Public Health settings within the State of Florida, four are working within the field of public health in other states, six are working in preventive medicine/occupational medicine, one is completing a second residency program, and three are working in fields outside of public health. Our residents are moving into public health leadership positions after completing the program.

    Eighty percent (80%) of our graduates are now in positions of leadership in Public Health.
